Arcadia Beach Coast House Ceiling: Complete!

Clark College Bench

Here are some photos of a sculptural bench that we recently installed at Clark College in Vancouver.

The blocks of cedar are shaped and installed to resemble clusters of columnar basalt.

The largest block (weighing 150 lbs.) is laser etched in memory of the donors son.

This wood was taken from remaining cutoffs from a tree farm in WA, supplied by a local forester.

Fancy chainsaw work and lots of sanding created the faceting that emulates natural stone.

How to install a 15,000 Lineal Foot ceiling

Here is a progress update on the installation of the custom ceiling at the Oregon Coast:

(Step 1) Create insanely complex shop drawing

(Step 2) Install 2 x 4 furring strips milled to exact tolerances.

(Step 3) Hang fabric between furring strips.

(Step 4) Sort through material and find best matches.

(Step 5) Start installing—proceed with caution.

(Step 6) Keep going.

(Step 7) Make crazy concealed flipper doors where access is needed.

(Step 8) Admire how crazy flipper doors close and completely disappear.

(Step 9) Scribe fit around steel columns.

(Step 10) Do this for about 5 months, until complete. (To be continued.....)

These are some pictures of a sofa and bed that we built for a client here in SE Portland:

The sofa is made from walnut. Thanks to Think Design for the custom upholstery!

We wanted the silhouette of the side table to match that of the upholstery. The table and cabinet are made form solid walnut.

Finley Coast house Progress

The finley ceiling is going in. This is the first of 15,000 lineal feet of riftsawn white oak!

The first step was to stretch black speaker fabric over the entire dropped ceiling.

Each light, speaker, and fire sprinkler fits perfectly within the randomized pattern. Our tolerances for this job is less than 1/16" over 50'.

RN-74 Communal Table

Here are some pictures of the RN-74 communal table in process.

The table is made up of solid walnut planks with brass inlay—after we install the brass, we scrape it flush to the wood— you can see the brass shavings mixed in with the walnut. This was very, very satisfying.

Here are the two halves ready for final assembly. We are installing a solid brass block between the halves. The final dimensions are 43" wide x 12' long.

RN-74 Furnishings

Hey there! Sorry we have been a bit out of touch lately, but here is a sampling of what we have been up to. These are all custom pieces for the new RN-74 restaurant in Seattle.

Stumptown Cart in the Whitney

RECENTLY COMPLETED: Stumptown Division

This summer, MADE was hired to re-vamp Stumptown Coffee Roasters' original Portland location on SE Division. The space had endured 10 years of abuse, and had some challenges with customer flow. With light modifications to the floor-plan, and a fresh take on materials and furnishings, we were able to visually open up the space, create more room for customers, and build in new coffee merchandising and storage solutions.

Modifications to the floor-plan included installing the cabinetry and display seen in the back left corner.

The bar face is made from Oregon white oak. We re-sawed the veneer from wind-fallen and diseased trees.

We also removed an old raised platform in the space and replaced it with a window counter and standing bar.

In the adjacent room, we installed two of our block tables, as well as two full-length wall mounted benches. The glass garage door is also new, and provides as much natural light as Portland will give us.

Salinas Desk

Hello Salinas Desk, our newest creation! The desk is on view at Show PDX: Opening reception tonight, and on display through the month: showpdx

The desk is constructed of two opposing bent laminations.

The full-extension drawer lives neatly inside the shape created by the undulations of the top. Behind the drawer, a removable face reveals a power strip and networking hub for powering and networking your electronics.

The desk measures 61" long by 30" deep, which should be plenty of space for writing, computing, and general grinding away!

Ahhh, the drawer. We really love the simplicity of this piece.

Stumptown Coffee Tables

Remember those large beams we were sawing up a month back? These are pics of the final project: We have made two for the Stumptown Division remodel.

Each table consists of nine sections of reclaimed beams. These puppies are HEAVY!

LI NING STORE 2 COMPLETE!

We recently wrapped up at the new Li Ning store in the pearl. This is adjacent to the first space we did for them at 910 NW Hoyt.

Similar to the space next door, we built two bent-woood window displays.

This display greets visitors at the entrance. This is installed completely flush to the drywall with a 1/2" reveal around the perimeter.

The customer counter is white lacquer body with a powdercoat steel top for strength and durability. The face is powder coated aluminum, with a led lit logo and reveal.

In the middle of the store, we fabricated two 20 foot long, curved slat-wall systems. The foyer display is in the distance.

We illuminated the MADE sign last week for the first time! It is lit using low voltage LED lights, drawing only 18 watts.

WORKING WITH BEAMS

These are beams that we are re-purposing to be used as coffee tables in Stumptown's Division St. cafe. Thanks to Creative WW for use of their shop!

Here are the fir beams in their rough state. 12" x 16" x 14' to start. These came from a grain elevator in Sherman County Oregon.

One year later and many re-drafts thanks to the City of Portland, and our sign is FINALLY up!

Installed! Bronze facia, reclaimed oak border, and acrylic lettering (to be internally lit).

We recently completed this dining table and shipped it to Los Angeles.

Side view: Legs are attached with custom-made steel brackets.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and polished with elbow grease!

Made from 12/4 solid walnut, the final top dimensions are 96" long, 42" wide, and 2-1/2" thick.

STUMPTOWN NYC

Last Fall MADE completed the installation of Stumptown Coffee Roaster’s first café in the Big Apple. Designed by Roman and Williams, and adjacent to the new Ace Hotel, the café boasts bold uses of walnut, brass, and steel. We enjoyed a very busy two weeks in Manhattan scribe fitting and installing the bar, condiment stands, and window bars. One thing about New York buildings—they are anything but level! Now if we just lived a little closer, we could go grab some coffee!

The bar face is made of traditionally joined frame and panel sections. The wood is solid walnut frames with custom veneered, book-matched walnut panels.

LI NING USA

LI NING IS UP AND RUNNING! MADE is proud to reveal Li Ning's first US retail store. Located in Portland's Pearl District, the retail store was installed in the foyer of their corporate headquarters. The showroom posed many challenges and engineering feats. MADE designed and built their main displays, customer counter, and a 22-globe chandelier installed 36 feet in the air. For those of you that don't know, Li Ning is a Chinese sportswear company, specializing in badminton, ping-pong, and tai chi gear—they also have a foothold in the NBA with the Clipper's Baron Davis. Look for a second location to open soon.

The main display consisits of 19 custom built display boxes. Each display is lit with a LED light strip.

The customer counter is powdercoated steel with a red aluminum facia. The lettering is milled acrylic, installed in the water-jet cut-out and backlit with LED lighting.

Behind the customer counter is the back-stock display. Rather than hide it is another room somewhere, we built shelving to showcase the Li Ning boxes. The shelves are built to fit exactly within the existing staircase's structure.

MADE also installed this chandelier, using 22 store bought glass globe pendant lights. The ceilings are 36' high, and we had to hoist the soffit in place using pulleys and rigging gear.
